Each new baby born as a resident of the Shire of Denmark in the new financial year will be gifted one cloth nappy as a new sustainable initiative towards reducing waste to landfill.

The cloth nappy initiative is a collaborative project between the Shire of Denmark, the Department of Health Western Australian Country Health Service (WACHS) and local community activist group Plastic Reduction Denmark.

Plastic Reduction Denmark member Carolyn Oliff has been busy sewing cloth nappies in a determined effort to provide local Denmark new parents a viable alternative option to using disposable nappies in an effort to reduce waste to landfill.

Shire of Denmark Sustainability Officer Yvette Caruso said making the move towards cloth nappies, even occasionally, can make a difference.

One cloth nappy will be distributed with information on the benefits of using cloth nappies to each new Denmark baby born in the new financial year in the

At their follow-up two week post-natal visit, new parents will receive one cloth nappy from a Denmark-based WACHS Child Health Nurse.

“More families are moving towards using cloth nappies because it doesn’t just help save the planet, but is also a saving to your pocket!” said Carolyn from Plastic Reduction Denmark.

Carolyn has also offered to teach interested community members to sew their own cloth nappies at the regular sewing bee get togethers held by Plastic Reduction Denmark.

Cloth nappies locally-made by Plastic Reduction Denmark can be purchased at the Denmark Cottage Crafts located at 5 Mitchell St, Denmark.

There is also a pattern available for loan through the Denmark Public Library for those who may wish to make their own.

The cloth nappy project is supported by the Shire’s Sustainability community-oriented environmental education program which seeks to fund initiatives that encourage behaviour change towards more sustainable outcomes.

The project is also aligned with the Shire of Denmark’s Sustainability Strategy 2021-2031 key Sustainability Pillar of Zero Waste 9.3 Implement best practice in relation to waste management to reduce waste going to landfill.
