Step Towards Housing Availability Options in the Heart of Denmark

The Shire of Denmark will continue to assist Denmark Futures as the organisation works towards finding a solution to Denmark’s housing shortage.

At last week’s Ordinary Council Meeting, Council considered a report proposing ten multiple dwellings at Unit 1, 31 Strickland Street, otherwise known as 31 on the Terrace.

The Shire’s Development Services team assessed the proposal put forward by Denmark Futures, and while acknowledging and supporting in-principle the concept of converting an existing building in the centre of town, determined that the design required more work before planning approval would be granted.

Council voted to recommend Denmark Futures revisit their design which had issues related to the density of design, including concerns around the lack of space, ventilation, sunlight, storage and other outcomes, as well as the impact on the immediate precinct created by high density residential parking coming into conflict with businesses and their patrons.

In their recommendation, Council indicated in-principle support for a lower density design of up to six dwellings which addresses the planning concerns.

Shire President Ceinwen Gearon, who is also a board member of Denmark Futures, credited the community leadership demonstrated by Denmark Futures.

“I’m proud to see community-led initiatives like this growing here in Denmark,” Dr Gearon said.

“Housing availability and affordability is in crisis, and we’re lucky to have such dedicated, compassionate community members who are taking proactive steps and looking for solutions.”

“The design that came before Council needs more work, but I’m pleased to see progress in this area and proud that our Local Government is working with our community on this issue, in alignment with our Strategic Community Plan community priority of enabling partnerships and advocacy in the housing availability and affordability space.”

“We look forward to seeing the reviewed proposal from Denmark Futures in the coming weeks.”

Representatives from Denmark Futures were present at the meeting, expressing their willingness to continue to work collaboratively with the Shire to reach a design that would align with the relevant planning requirements.
