Local and Sustainable Food
Local and Sustainable Food is a Sustainability Pillar in our Sustainability Strategy 2021 - 2031. The relevant key principle is: 'A sustainable food system that focuses on the production, processing, distribution and disposal of health food to the community in ways that contribute to the health of the local economy'. Our objectives related to this pillar are:
- Enable a local circular economy
- Support businesses seeking to develop food production facilities
- Support sustainable farming practices
- Support programs for local sustainable food innovations

What We're Doing
Some current projects related to the Local and Sustainable Food pillar include:
- Shire Seed Library - a collection of heirloom and locally grown seeds for growers to plant, harvest and return the seed to the seed library so it continues to circulate for others to enjoy.
- We collaborate with local community organisations to provide education on best sustainable practice in the area of food and garden organics by facilitating and supporting community kitchen garden composting and worm farm workshops to the community.
- The Shire is a supporter of the Wilson Inlet Catchment Committee's Biochar research project
- In the 2023/24 Annual Budget, Council has committed more funding for our roads network on the back of strong community feedback during the Strategic Community Plan major review.
