The Shire of Denmark has continued its collaboration with Kwoorabup Nature School to revegetate bushland areas near the school in support of National Trees Day, in an event held earlier this week in advance of National Trees Day on Sunday 28 July.
The Shire and the school have been working on an annual revegetation program together since 2020.
Under guidance from the Shire’s Revegetation Officer, students undertake revegetation activities, including seed collection, plant propagation, site preparation, and planting to rehabilitate previously disturbed sites. The students have also undertaken weed control at the sites and planting.
Shire Revegetation Officer Anais Schneider said every opportunity to look after the land with the next generation is rewarding.
“The kids have a lot of enthusiasm and their ears closer to the ground. If you plant and look after seedlings, you gain an understanding that nature can’t be rushed, but also that all big things grow from little things,” she said.
250 plants from thirty-two different local plant species were planted over the course of the day at a site near the school colloquially called ‘Spirit Creek’ which is a drainage line near the school within Shire reserve.
Students across all age groups and classes were involved in the site restoration, with up to 120 students from year one through to year six participating in revegetation planting activities.
Kwoorabup Nature School Deputy Principal Melanie Trenow said for the school, National Tree Day is not tokenistic planting on one day of the year but an ongoing project.
“We appreciate the learning and deep connection to the local environment our students develop through this project and thank the Shire of Denmark's Revegetation team for their ongoing support and sharing of their knowledge.”
