The proposal for the Kwoorabup Native Tree Nursery, a project that promises to enhance local biodiversity and support community revegetation efforts, has been endorsed by the Shire of Denmark Council and marks a significant step forward for habitat preservation in our region.
This endorsement reflects the Shire’s continued commitment to environmental conservation and protection, a key priority of our community.
The Kwoorabup Native Tree Nursery is a collaboration between the Shire of Denmark and the Wilson Inlet Catchment Committee (WICC), a non-profit, community run corporation committed to promoting land use practices that protect our environment.
The nursery will play a crucial role in preserving local native trees by using locally sourced seeds to ensure higher seedling success rates and maintain the ecological integrity of the region.
In addition, the project will also create employment and volunteering opportunities, offer apprenticeships to local students, provide educational programs to the community and generate income through public and commercial sales of seedlings, all which Shire President Kingsley Gibson said will boost the local economy and foster community engagement.
“The scale of opportunities this proposal is offering is undeniable and for a community that is as passionate about the environment as ours, there’s a real desire for the nursery to become an integral part of our Shire,” Cr Gibson said.
The nursery will be located on a portion of vacant land between the Shire Administration Building and the Denmark Country Club - a strategic location enabling WICC to produce up to 300,000 seedlings annually and support various revegetation projects across the Shire.
With the Shire's focus on improving planning and preparations for the future of Shire-managed reserves, Cr Gibson anticipates the Kwoorabup Native Tree Nursery will become a cornerstone of Denmark's environmental conservation efforts.
“The development of this nursery aligns with the Shire's commitment to safeguarding the natural environment and ensuring biodiversity is preserved for future generations.”
