In response to the current housing crisis, community feedback, and the recently amended WA Caravan Park and Camping Ground Regulations, the Denmark Shire Council voted this week to adopt a new policy that makes it easier to obtain approval to use a tiny home on wheels for the purpose of affordable housing.
Tiny homes on wheels are an innovative affordable housing solution offering flexibility and a reduced environmental footprint, as well as enabling the separation of house and land ownership.
The new policy enables the Shire to approve the use of one tiny home on wheels per private lot in zones where conventional dwellings are permitted by granting a 24-month occupancy permit, which may be renewed if all policy provisions and permit conditions are met.
The policy contains a list of minimum requirements including considerations related to service connections, bushfire risk, health and safety.
Denmark Shire President Kingsley Gibson said the new policy aligns with the objectives and priorities outlined within both the Shire’s Strategic Community Plan and Draft Local Planning Strategy.
“We hope that this policy will encourage tiny homes to increase the supply of affordable small-format housing across our Shire in circumstances where this can be achieved in a safe and sensitive manner,” Cr Gibson said.
