Annual Firebreak and Fuel Management Notice to Hit Mailboxes Soon

Ratepayers across the Shire will start receiving copies of the annual Firebreak and Fuel Management Notice in the mail from this week.

The notice details what every ratepayer in the Shire must do to reduce the fire hazards on their property for the duration of the maintenance period which extends from 1 December to 30 April.

Every year, residents are required to ensure their gutters are clear of flammable material for the five months of the year when the bushfire risk is highest, along with several other specific requirements such as clear firebreaks, well-maintained lawns and gardens, and reduced fuel loads in bushland areas near built assets.

All of the requirements are laid out in the Notice, with compliance inspections to be carried out throughout the maintenance period and fines to be handed out to non-compliant properties.

Resources are available to assist community members via the Shire’s website, with the popular and free Book a Ranger program also running again until the end of November.

Denmark Shire President Kingsley Gibson said the Shire is continuing to strengthen its approach to bushfire safety and property compliance.

“As our climate dries and the bushfire risks increase, it’s more important than ever that we all do our part,” Cr Gibson said.

“We will be issuing fines this year, so I encourage residents to make the most of the resources available and to take the necessary actions before the maintenance period begins in December.”
