Denmark Shire Council last week voted to amend the Shire’s Dog Areas Policy to ensure regular reviews that capture and act on evolving community sentiment.
The decision to conduct a biennial formal review of the policy came about following a petition received by Council.
Representatives of the dog-owning community in Denmark raised a number of issues with the policy, particularly focused on the Prawn Rock Channel and Ocean Beach areas which are popular recreation spots for dog owners.
Shire President Ceinwen Gearon said she hoped this decision would assure concerned community members that Council is continuing to do its best to find balanced and up-to-date solutions to an on-going issue of conflicting user groups in the area.
“We recognise and acknowledge the deep love all members of our community have for the Prawn Rock Channel area,” Cr Gearon said.
“The policies we put in place are always put forward with our responsibility to all users front of mind.”
“We won’t shy away from reviewing policies in order to keep them current and reflective of community values and sentiment.”
The first review of the policy will be conducted prior to July 2023 and biennially in the years to follow.
Reviews will incorporate community consultation.
