Ocean Beach Redevelopment Project Update

Published on Thursday, 31 October 2024 at 11:59:36 AM

Ahead of the busy summer period, we wanted to give our community a comprehensive update on the redevelopment works occurring at Ocean Beach.

Project Update

  • RECENTLY COMPLETED: Earthworks and retaining wall for the new building
  • DUE TO BE DONE BY THE END OF THE YEAR: New building pad, footings and walls, internal works within the Surf Club Building, landscaping to begin
  • ON THE CARDS FOR 2025: Completion of the new building, plus storage area, public amenities and kiosk, all abilities parking and access paths, complete ground floor refurbishment of Surf Club Building, landscaping and other public realm works to be finished

12 Months To Go!

To date, we have not published a reopening date, but we are happy to announce that we now expect to reopen Ocean Beach in October 2025.

In the meantime, the site will remain closed to the public. Limited access to the beach is via the stairs at the Ocean Beach lookout.

Safety at Ocean Beach

Ocean Beach will be patrolled by Royal Lifesaving WA and Denmark Surf Life Saving Club lifeguards this summer.

New signage is set to be installed at the stairs to advise visitors of the risks of strong currents and high surf at Ocean Beach, particularly in the water directly in front of the stairs.

Expected Congestion

We anticipate the 2024/2025 summer holiday period to be a particularly challenging time for congestion in and around the Prawn Rock Channel and Ocean Beach area.

We are developing resources to be provided to all local accommodation providers in Denmark to highlight other local beaches, to provide some educational material about how to identify a rip, and to encourage visitors to be respectful of the environment by avoiding littering and considering alternative means of transport.

Despite these efforts, this summer will be a challenging time, and we thank you in advance for your patience. We’ll be encouraging community members and visitors to report issues to us using our new online Report It form available via our website, and our Rangers will be doing regular patrols in the area.

We all look very much forward to summer 2025/2026 and the new facilities and public open space we’ll all be able to enjoy at Ocean Beach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Ocean Beach have to remain closed during the summer?

Essentially, it’s about prioritising safety. Ocean Beach is currently a construction site, and we need to do what we can to help reduce the risk and likelihood of members of the public entering the construction site.

Why does the Ocean Beach carpark have to be closed? Can’t you just open even a part of it?

The contractors are using the carpark as a laydown area, with a section also partitioned off for Denmark Surf Life Saving Club equipment storage.

Even if we did have space in the carpark, we would not open it to the public while Ocean Beach is a construction site, in an effort to reduce the likelihood of members of the public entering the construction site.

What about parking? The Ocean Beach Lookout and surrounding area will become incredibly congested.

Unfortunately, parking will be limited in the area. We will do what we can to promote the use of alternative means of transport to access Ocean Beach, and to promote other local beaches. We will also rely on local word of mouth to assist us with spreading this message.
