Upgrades to the Prawn Rock Channel Precinct will be ramping up this month, thanks to $350,000 State Government funding announced earlier this year.
Since the announcement in January, remediation works to fix storm erosion-impacted sections of the channel and construction of a path from the Ocean Beach lookout have been completed.
The next steps in the project, set to get underway this week, include an access stairway down to Ocean Beach from the newly created path at the lookout and much-needed universal access toilets.
The new toilet block will mirror the accessible toilet block installed at Lights Beach in 2021, and the upgrades don’t stop there, with the middle carpark set to be sealed and expanded to include universal access car bays, motorcycle parking and bicycle racks.
The Ocean Beach lookout will also be undergoing some much-needed maintenance, meaning visitors to the area should expect some disruption to pedestrian access, carpark closures and reduced traffic speeds whilst the project progress.
Denmark Shire President Ceinwen Gearon said the Prawn Rock Channel Precinct upgrades will make a difference to the user experience in the area for both residents and visitors.
“We’re excited to see the steps down to Ocean Beach from the lookout being progressed so our community can have improved year-round access to the beach while reducing disturbance of the fragile coastal dune vegetation there,” Cr Gearon said.
“And the installation of an accessible toilet block will be appreciated by us all, improving environmental outcomes and adding a much-needed convenience to the area.”
The upgrades expected to be ready to be enjoyed by the community and visitors by spring later this year.
