Denmark united last week to take a stand against family and domestic violence as part of the 16 Days in WA campaign.
Dressed in orange and led by the Denmark Running Club, more than 50 participants walked or ran 16 laps of McLean Oval, demonstrating a collective commitment to building a safer and more respectful community as the country continues to grapple with the scourge of domestic violence.
With support from the Denmark SES, Denmark Community Foundation and Denmark Fine Food Market, participants stayed back to enjoy a well-deserved sausage sizzle after the event.
Earlier this year, the Shire of Denmark signed up to the Respectful Relations in Sport and Recreation Program, a primary prevention initiative that promotes gender equality and respectful relationships in sport and recreation clubs across Western Australia, helping to tackle the root causes of family and domestic violence.
The Department of Communities funds Starick to deliver the program, with in-kind support from the Department of Local Government, Sport, and Cultural Industries.
The program supports State Sporting Associations, sport and recreational-based (youth) programs, and local governments to build their capacity to prevent violence and abusive behaviours through the promotion of gender equality and respect on a local level through community sports and other programs.
This year’s 16 Laps for 16 Days in WA event was an opportunity to showcase the program and the resources available to local clubs. Together, we can all #PlayYourPart to stop family and domestic violence.
