Two locals were recently fined thousands of dollars following successful prosecutions for serious dog attacks in the Denmark area.

The first of the two incidents occurred in a private home when a friend of the dog owner was attacked by a dog, resulting in lacerations to the face and arm which resulted in overnight hospital attention.

In line with its no-tolerance approach to dog attacks resulting in serious harm, the Shire of Denmark commenced prosecution and successfully argued for harsher penalties than are within the power of Local Government, with the court agreeing to impose a $4700 fine plus substantial court costs.

The dog was also officially declared dangerous and granted a destruction order which was remitted for two years.

The second incident occurred on Lights Beach when a couple walking their two dogs were attacked by two other dogs that were not kept under control. During the attack, one of the innocent dogs was killed.

As a result, the two offending dogs were officially declared dangerous, and the Shire successfully prosecuted the person responsible who was ordered to pay a $1200 fine, plus additional court costs.

Reported incidents of dog attacks in the Shire of Denmark have risen in recent years.

Shire of Denmark CEO David King said the Ranger Services team will continue to treat dog attacks seriously, urging dog owners to remember their responsibility to always have the proper control over their pets, or risk penalties.

A simple online Report It form is available at www.denmark.wa.gov.au for reporting nuisance pets or dog attacks to Ranger Services.
