The annual installation of temporary fencing at the Bird Sanctuary near Prawn Rock Channel was completed earlier this month as visiting endangered migratory shorebirds arrive for the summer months.
The fencing will stay in place until April as a guide for beachgoers and dog walkers to keep clear from the sanctuary area while the migrating birds rest after their long journey.
Anyone who visits the Prawn Rock Channel area this summer could have the chance to spot a Bar-tailed Godwit, Curlew Sandpiper, Red Knot or a Red-necked Stint, which all travel to Denmark each year from the Arctic Circle, 12,000 kilometres away. There are also resident shorebirds nesting and raising their chicks in the sanctuary at this time, including Red-capped Plovers and Oystercatchers.
While the migratory birds rest and the nesting resident birds raise their chicks, community members and visitors are invited to bring their binoculars to enjoy these endangered birds from behind the temporary fencing.
Dog owners visiting the sandflats beyond Prawn Rock Channel with their pets are reminded that dogs are not permitted in the bird sanctuary area north of the temporary fencing and that dog poo bags are provided free of charge at the car park.
For more information about the Bird Sanctuary, signage is available in the area, and additional information is available online.
