Why is this happening?
Water Corporation plans to open the Wilson Inlet sandbar in Denmark on Wednesday 25 September 2024 in accordance with an agreement reached in discussion with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER), the Shire of Denmark and the City of Albany.
As part of a plan to manage potential flooding in the area, the opening of the sandbar takes place when inlet levels reach a minimum level, usually occurring sometime between June and September.
Due to recent rainfall, the water level of the Wilson Inlet has exceeded the minimum level required for the opening of the sandbar, under the Wilson Inlet Sandbar Opening Protocol which was originally put in place in 2009 and revised in 2022-23.
When is this happening?
We anticipate the sandbar opening to occur on Wednesday 25 September sometime between 10am and 12noon. An excavator is expected to be onsite from Monday 23 September in preparation.
Important safety information
The sandbar opening usually attracts widespread community interest, precautions will be taken on the day to ensure public safety.
We also want to remind surfers to be mindful of the potential for changeable conditions in the vicinity of the opening, due to the increased exchange of water between Wilson Inlet and the ocean.
